Editorial: Chimerism testing after allogeneic stem cell transplantation: importance of timing and optimal technique for testing in different clinical–biological situations

The monitoring of chimerism has become a routine diagnostic instrument at centers performing allogeneic stem cell or bone marrow transplantation. Despite the widespread use of molecular techniques permitting the assessment and the surveillance of donor- and recipient-derived hemopoiesis, there have been no international efforts to standardize the technical approaches, and to provide a basis for the comparison of diagnostic results. We believe that in this rapidly growing field there is a need for standardization directed towards optimum diagnostic support for clinical decision making.

The Debate Round-Table has been opened in Leukemia in 1999 (Vol 13; issue 12 pp 2059–2086). The last series of articles within the Debate appeared in December 2001 (Vol 15, issue 12, pp 1966–1995). In this issue, Leukemia presents contributions from a number of leading diagnostic centers describing their experience with a technical approach which is being increasingly used in chimerism testing. It is based on the PCR analysis of microsatellite markers using capillary electrophoresis and fluorescence detection. We hope that current and future users of this technique will benefit from the information provided and that these contributions will stimulate further discussion of the important issues raised.
