  1. In total, 88 patients with hematocrit values above 51% were diagnosed according to the PVSG and the WHO criteria, into four groups: Polycythemia Vera (PV), idiopathic erythrocytosis, secondary erythrocytosis, and ‘no Absolute Erythrocytosis’ (no AE) when the red cell mass measurement was not increased. eight patients could not have any defined diagnosis, as some clinical data were not available. Ht=hematocrit; Hb=hemoglobin; WBC=white blood cells; EEC=endogenous erythroid colonies; Epo=erythropoietin; s.d.=standard deviation.
