New Complexes of Phenols and Lactams

Abstract

COMPLEXES of drugs, including phenols, are of continuing interest, especially to pharmacologists, for purposes of solubilization, administration, antagonism, detoxification and controlled release1–13. Schmulbach et al.14 studied the spectrography of phenols complexed with amides in solution but no products were isolated or characterized, only a 1 : 1 complex was suggested. Although polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is known to form complexes with phenols1–3,5,7, these have not been well defined because of molecular weight variation and steric inhibition of complete complexation.
