Are binary systems involved in supernova explosions always disrupted?

Abstract

No known pulsar is a member of binary system. Does this mean, as has been suggested1, that pulsars are the result of supernova explosions (hypothesis 1), and explosions which occurred in binary systems have in most cases disrupted the systems (hypothesis 2)? The discovery of two X-ray ‘pulsars’ (Cen X-3 and Her X-1) and other compact X-ray sources in binary systems seems to be an argument against hypothesis 2 if we believe that hypothesis 1 is also valid for compact X-ray sources. Here I show that hypothesis 2 is indeed untenable from the point of view of present theories of close binary evolution.
