Cyclic GMP Response in vivo to Cholinergic Stimulation of Gastric Mucosa

Abstract

INTEREST in cyclic guanosine 3′,5′-monophosphate (cGMP) has been stimulated by the demonstration that its sister nucleotide, cyclic adenosine 3′,5′-monophosphate (cAMP), is an intracellular mediator or ‘second messenger’ for many hormones, including noradrenaline, the neurohormone of the sympathetic nervous system1. Reports concerning the possible implication of cAMP in gastric secretion in mammals are conflicting. The infusion of histamine increases cAMP in canine gastric juice2 but does not stimulate adenylate cyclase activity of canine gastric mucosa3. A review of the subject has led to no consensus of opinion4.
