Transverse fault systems in fold belts and oceanic fracture zones

Abstract

THE fracture zones of modern oceans seem to be the favoured channelways for the upwelling of mineralised hydrothermal fluids1–3. It is proposed that deeply penetrating, transverse fault zones in the Caledonian and other fold belts were derived from such oceanic fracture zones, and continued to act as channelways for the uprising of magma and mineralised thermal waters throughout the evolution of the oceanic trough, during orogenesis and even into post-collision (post-orogenic) times. The collated evidence suggests that such fault systems are widespread in fold belts of various ages.
