Packaging of prophage and host DNA by coliphage λ

Abstract

Bacteriophage λ can package headfuls of prophage and host DNA. The resulting particles are not infective without removal in vitro of unpackaged DNA that protrudes from the head and prevents the attachment of tails. After tail attachment the particles can transduce a large number of host genes.
