Cosmic rays and interstellar tunnels

Abstract

MEASUREMENTS have been made1 of the isotopic abundances of Be in cosmic rays, which have led to the conclusion that the typical cosmic ray lifetime in the galaxy is 2× 107 yr. Furthermore, measurements2 of the cosmic ray electron energy spectrum in the range 6–100 GeV, have shown a bend in the spectrum which can be attributed to inverse Compton and synchrotron losses. The position of the bend is indicative of the cosmic ray electron lifetime, and an age of 1.2×107 yr is derived.
