Rapid fluctuations of radio flux and polarisation in quasar 3C273

Abstract

QUASAR 3C273, one of the brightest and most studied quasars, is variable over a wide wavelength range. The changes of its luminosity may occur on a timescale of a few years or of several days in both the radio1 and optical2,3 range. There are variations of linear and circular polarisation in the radio domain4 and sometimes the optical emission is circularly polarised5. The data from our simultaneous radio and optical observations show rapid variations of radio flux and circular polarisation at λ=1.35 cm, and of optical linear polarisation of 3C273 within one day or several hours. These variations are possibly more rapid than those previously reported.
