Is serum thymic factor of thymic origin?

Abstract

THE role of the thymus in the control of the immune response is generally accepted, but the existence and the role of thymic hormones remain controversial1. Among factors claimed to be thymic hormones2–6, ‘facteur thymique serique’ (FTS) was not extracted from the thymus gland but from pig's blood6. This serum factor is a nonapeptide7, and poses the problem of whether FTS, or similar material, is present in the thymus1. By using non-denaturing techniques (4 °C ultrafiltration and chromatography) for the isolation of peptides and proteins from the thymus we have found that it does not.
