Geomagnetic intensity in Athens between 2000 BC and AD 400

Abstract

MEASUREMENTS of the intensity in Athens of the geomagnetic field between 2000 BC and AD 400 are reported here. The material from which the intensity was determined consisted primarily of sherds from the Agora excavations. Some sherds, and a whole skyphos, from the collection of the Ashmolean museum at Oxford were also sampled. The ancient intensity of the Earth's magnetic field was inferred from step wise thermal demagnetisation. This is essentially the technique developed by Thellier1, with the modifications described by Walton2.
