Particle fluorescence and bioluminescence distributions in the eastern tropical Pacific

Abstract

The measurement of certain optical properties provides valuable information regarding the distribution of planktonic organisms in the ocean. Here we report vertical profiles of fluorescence, beam attenuation and bioluminescence in the oxygen minimum zone of the eastern tropical Pacific relative to possible physical and biological particle sources. Of particular interest is the observation of a deep fluorescence maximum within the oxygen minimum zone that has not been previously reported.
