Basaltic systems and a corresponding states equation for crystal growth rates

Abstract

Rates of crystal growth are a major influence on the processes of igneous rock crystallization but relatively few measurements are available. Here I examine temperature variations of growth rate for basaltic minerals in terms of an empirical relationship proposed for small organic molecules1,2 and show that this describes equally well rates of growth in the basaltic system. These results suggest useful applications of the relationship in studies of grain growth during cooling and also in the extrapolation of experimental data.
