C27–C29 Monoaromatic anthrasteroid hydrocarbons in Cretaceous black shales

Abstract

The structural elucidation of aromatic steroid hydrocarbons occurring in sediments and petroleums has been the subject of increasing interest during recent years1–7. Aromatization of the precursor sterols of marine origin has been shown to start at early stages of diagenesis in immature sediments8,9. In elucidating these first aromatization reactions we have recently identified two major series of ring A monoaromatic steroids, 1 and 2 (Fig. 1), in Cretaceous black shales from the southern and eastern North Atlantic, collected during the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP)8. We report here the identification of two novel series of geochemical markers, the ring B mono-aromatic anthrasteroid hydrocarbons 3 and 4, as the two other major series occurring in the same immature DSDP samples (Fig. 1).
