Large-scale regional units in the depleted upper mantle revealed by an isotope study of the South-West Indian Ridge

Abstract

Isotope analyses of ocean island basalts have demonstrated the existence of regional geochemical provinces, the Indian Ocean being distinguishable from the North Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Equivalent analyses of basalts from the South-West Indian Ridge now indicate that the upper mantle under the Indian Ocean also has a distinct isotope composition. Thus, the upper mantle itself must be composed of several discrete provinces which may relate to the convection pattern.
