Although all of these developments are quite recent, it is already difficult to remember what science was like in the 'pregenomic' era. Ultimately, understanding these genomes may reveal which human attributes are innate and which are acquired, and how the interplay between heredity, lifestyle and the environment affects our susceptibility to disease.
