  1. aPups were screened at 3–5 days of age by PCR for TGF-β1 from tail-snip DNA as in Materials and methods. The numbers of pups for each TGF-β1 genotype generated for this study are indicated.
  2. bThe number indicates the ratio of TGF-β1−/− pups to TGF-β1+/+ pups. A (−/−:+/+) ratio of 1 is expected for Mendelian inheritance. For BALB-background groups, this ratio is lower than 1, indicating embryonic lethality of most TGF-β1−/− conceptuses. While genetic background influences the rate of embryonic loss of TGF-β1−/− conceptuses (Gorham et al21 and Kallapur et al,30 and data in Table 1), H-2 haplotype is not a genetic determinant of embryonic lethality of BALB-background TGF-β1−/− conceptuses.
  3. cF1 pups were generated from BALB/c-TGF-β1+/− mice crossed with 129/CF-1-TGF-β1+/− mice. The (−/−:+/+) ratio is 1, indicating that the BALB-background phenotype of a (−/−:+/+) ratio of 0.2 is recessively inherited in this cross.
