Impaired formation of two distinct umbilical vessels in Alk1-null embryos. Histological analysis of umbilical vessels of Alk1+/lacZ (a, c) and Alk1lacZ/lacZ (b, d) embryos at E9.5 (a, b) and E10.5 (c, d). Transverse sections of whole-mount X-gal-stained umbilical vessels were counterstained with NFR. Two distinct blood vessels were apparent in Alk1+/lacZ, whereas only one large persistent vessel was present in Alk1lacZ/lacZ embryos. It is interesting to note that the UA-predominant Alk1 expression became evident in E10.5 embryos (c).
