Localization of DNP-BSA across the mesothelial basement membrane in the mesentery of (a) control and (b) diabetic rats. Most of the gold particles are located at the edge of mesothelial basement membrane in tissues of diabetic animals (arrows), demonstrating a relative restriction of the passage of albumin in chronic hyperglycemia. Morphometric distribution of the labeling across the basement membrane was determined by evaluation of R = d/D, where d is the distance from the plasma membrane to the gold particle, and D is the thickness of the basement membrane at the same site.
