Effects of oxidized α1AT. Oxidized α1AT, prepared as described in the text, protects against silica-induced lavage PMN influx to the same extent as the original unoxidized product. Oxidized α1AT does not affect macrophage (MAC) levels in lavage (data not shown). The Western blot for α1AT shows that the pattern of breakdown bands is not changed by oxidation as described in the text, indicating that oxidation has not broken up the protein.
