Immunodetection of α5 integrin, activated FAK (actFAK), Ki67 antigen, and matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP2) in human anchoring villi. At 4 to 7 weeks of gestation, α5 integrin and FAK colocalized in extravillous trophoblast cells (arrows) in a transitional region that was highly proliferative. At 4 to 7 weeks of gestation, strong positive immunoreactivity for MMP2 was also found in extravillous trophoblast (EVT) cells within the column. By 12 weeks of gestation, α5 integrin, FAK and MMP2 expression were markedly reduced in EVT cells. Scale bar = 50 μm. Immunoperoxidase staining, ×100.
