Quantitative evaluation (by means of computer-assisted microscopy) of the staining intensity (determined by means of the mean optical density variable) reflecting the expression of galectin-1 and -3 and their binding sites (BS) in nasal polyp samples treated with a concentration of 250 ng/ml (R250) of budesonide or left untreated (CT). This evaluation was performed on the surface and glandular epithelium and the connective tissue of the nasal polyp samples, and reported separately for the polyps from the nonallergic (N-ALL, n = 5) and the allergic patients (ALL, n = 5). The data are reported as the mean and its standard error evaluated on 50 measurements (ie, 10 fields evaluated for each sample). MOD = mean optical density; a.u. = arbitrary units.
