Susceptibility to apoptosis of macrophages relative to intimal macrophages (the apoptotic macrophage index) and that of smooth muscle cells relative to intimal smooth muscle cells (the apoptotic smooth muscle cell index) in the five groups. The apoptotic macrophage index is greatest in Group IV and significantly greater than in Groups I and III. Moreover, the apoptotic macrophage index values in Groups II and V are significantly greater than the apoptotic smooth muscle cell index values. **P<0.01, *P<0.05.
