The pattern of podoplanin expression in squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix is very similar in biopsy samples (a, c, e) and hysterectomy specimens (b, d, f). (a and b) The tumor cells show complete lack of podoplanin expression, while there is mild to moderate staining in the desmoplastic stroma. The D2-40 antibody strongly stains the lymphatic vessels and highlights the presence of lymphatic invasion. (c, d) Focal podoplanin expression in cervical squamous cell carcinoma is mainly localized to the periphery of invading tumor cell nests.
