The histologic criteria for the diagnosis of papillary can be controversial, as in the tumor shown in (A). Ret immunohistochemistry identifies the C terminus of the products of ret/PTC gene rearrangements (see Fig. 3) and allows identification of tumors that harbor these molecular markers of papillary carcinoma.
