The intestinal–crypt casino

Stem cells can renew themselves indefinitely — a feature that is often attributed to asymmetrical cell division. Fresh experimental and mathematical models of the intestine provide evidence that begs to differ.

  1. What does the author mean by "scaling" in this context?

    If you compute a randomly distributed labeled population of cells in a field with equal potential (assuming they don't move and can't occupy the same position), you'll get clusters that eventually fuse together and occupy the entirety of the field. How is this scaling? Agent-based models would be most appropriate to visualize this behavior.
