Strong positive 5T4 expression in renal cell carcinoma. Light microscopy (Γ 20 magnification) of a Fuhrman grade 3 clear cell carcinoma (A) following application of murine anti-human 5T4 followed by immunoperoxidase (brown precipitate denoting presence of bound murine antibody) and haematoxylin stains. The inset picture shows the same tissue with a mouse isotype control antibody applied. All malignant tissue examined that stained positive for 5T4 exhibited a membranous staining pattern. A section of kidney taken from the same patient is demonstrated (B) showing brown staining within a swollen glomerulus. A sample of tissue from a normal kidney taken from a donor with nonmalignant disease (C) was also obtained and this shows much weaker stromal staining within the glomerulus.
