Although mediastinal downstaging, complete tumour resection and pathological response (⩾60%) were associated with overall survival in the univariate analyses, they also correlated with each other. It was not possible to include all of these factors in the multivariate model (this table presents the updated analysis of our previous report (Betticher et al, 2003)).
