  2. The staining intensity was graded on a scale of 0–3 (0=no staining, 1=weak, 2=moderate, and 3=strong staining). The percentage of cells that were positive for NGAL were scored as follows: 1=<25% cells positive, 2=25–50% cells positive, 3=50–75% cells positive, and 4=75–100% cells positive. The staining intensity score and percent positivity score for each section were multiplied to obtain a composite score for that section. The composite score ranged from 0 to 12.
