Viable cells (upper chart) and cells in early stages of apoptosis showing positive Annexin V staining but negative for propidium iodide (lower chart), represented as a percentage of the total cell population. Values shown are mean percentages±s.e.m. of total cell counts across replicate experiments (n=4); *P<0.05, **P<0.01; one-way ANOVA. Each replicate involved the counting of a total of a minimum of 10 000 events.
