From: The design and utility of polymer-stabilized iron-oxide nanoparticles for nanomedicine applications

Functional iron-oxide nanoparticles (IONPs). Functional polymers are grafted onto an inorganic core of magnetite (Fe3O4) or maghemite (Fe2O3) through an anchoring group, such as an amine, carboxylic acid or phosphonic acid group. The polymer shell improves the stability of IONPs in solution, and also allows the encapsulation of a therapeutic agent.
