From: Energy transfer in supramolecular materials for new applications in photonics and electronics

Excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) in a series of o-hydroxyphenylimidazoles (a) induces a large Stokes shift in these materials, which effectively reduces the overlap integral between the emission of the donor and the absorption of the acceptor components. This turns off energy transfer, making these materials interesting for obtaining colors that are the binary mixture of the chemical components (b).
