Expression of E-cadherin is not related to the microregional growth pattern of cancers of the uterine cervix. A reticular, highly branched pattern of invasion, including apparently scattered single cells (arrowheads), can be observed in tumours with strong membranous E-cadherin expression (A). Conversely, compact, spheroid-like configurations of tumour cell clusters (demarcated by a white dashed line) can be observed in tumours completely negative for E-cadherin (B). 200 x magnification, scale bar in B=100 μm.
