PIO effects on complex I and complex IV expression and activity in cortical mitochondria. Mitochondrial fractions from cortex (10 mg; wet weight) of treated and untreated animals were analyzed as in Figure 5. Panel a shows results in female mice. Panel b shows results in male mice. PIO treatment induced significantly decreased expression levels of complex I in WT female mice. Expression levels of complex I were increased in PIO-treated PS1-KI mice, both genders. Complex I activity was found significantly decreased in PIO-treated WT males. No changes were found for complex IV. CTRL- and PIO-diet samples are shown with open and crossed bars, respectively. Band areas were expressed as absolute values (A.U., arbitrary units). Data are shown as means±S.E.M.; n=4 for each group. Statistical analysis was performed with two-tailed Student’s t-test for unpaired comparisons between the treated and untreated groups (95% confidence level). *0.05<P≤0.095; **0.05≤P<0.01; ***P≤0.01
