Sources of NSCs. Using recent technical advances, NSCs can be derived via three diverse methods: direct extraction from primary CNS tissues, including fetal brain, adult brain and spinal cord tissue; differentiation from pluripotent stem cells, such as embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells; and transdifferentiation from somatic cells, such as skin fibroblasts, urine cells and blood cells, which are easily harvested in the clinic.
