Structure of a cilium. Schematic diagram illustrating a longitudinal section of a primary cilium including the localisation of the proteins encoded by the disease-causing genes in Bardet–Biedl Syndrome. The chaperonin complex mediates assembly of the BBSome, which interacts with BBS3 (a GTPase) and members of the Rab family to organise ciliogenesis and maintenance of the cilium. The cross-section view demonstrates the configuration of motile cilia (9+2) and immotile cilia (9+0).
