Effect of ethanol on insulin sensitivity in rats. Male Wistar rats were fed with different dose of ethanol (0.5, 2.5 or 5 g·kg-1·d-1) for 22 weeks. Fasting blood samples were collected on the day before sacrifice to measure blood glucose levels and insulin concentrations. Insulin resistance was estimated by the HOMA-IR method and defined as fasting serum insulin (µU/ml) × FPG (mM)/22.5. **P < 0.01, *P < 0.05 compared with control group.
