Histological changes of the corneal epithelium after sleep deprivation (SD). (a) Superficial layers of corneal epithelial cells became more compacted after 2 days of SD, and the corneal epithelial surface became rough at days 6 and 10. The bar represents 50 μm. (b) Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that the shedding of cells from the mouse corneal surface gradually increased from days 2 to 10. The bar represents 100 μm. (c) High magnification of SEM showed that the density and length of the microvilli on the apical surface of the corneal epithelium gradually decreased after SD for 6 to 10 days. The scale bar represents 1 μm (n=3/group).
