  1. Locus tag (Tgu4a) in the zebra finch genome; number of samples (N); sequence patterns (a, autosomal; m, monomorphic; NA, no amplification); length of sequence (Seq) comparable between males and females, through direct sequencing. In many cases, the analysable sequence corresponds to a subset of the total amplified product, due to the presence of indels. The total number of polymorphisms indicative of Z or W is shown within parentheses, for each locus. At locus TAF9B, we only obtained a readable sequence from a single great reed warbler female, and despite indication of sex linkage to the W chromosome (see main text), we excluded this locus from further analyses (*). The number of polymorphisms used for the positive assessment of autosomal location (a), that is, rejection of sex linkage, is also indicated within parentheses.
