Histological examination of myocardium from rats treated with l-NAME (C+L) (a–d) or enalapril followed by l-NAME (E+L) (e–h) for 0, 3, 7 and 10 days. Myocardium displayed normal histological features in both C+L and E+L at day 0. In both treatment groups, there were 1–2 small foci of infarct as early as day 3 that was characterized by cardiomyocyte loss and increased cellular infiltrate (b, f). The progression of this damage was characterized by increases in size and number of foci of infarction in myocardium from both treatment groups over the course of 10 days.
