  1. Community composition was calculated using the β-sim distance metric. Single-factor analyses were completed with ADONIS (permutational multivariate analysis of variance) for categorical variables and Mantel correlations for continuous variables. Multi-factor analyses considered all variables in ADONIS. For simplicity, insignificant factors (that is, P>0.05) are excluded.
