Mass in the lateral cervical-thoracic region in a male Wistar rat

A 37-week-old male Wistar rat of strain WNIN (Wistar/NIN) from the breeding colony of the International Institute of Biotechnology and Toxicology was presented for necropsy with the history of a mass in the left lateral aspect of the cervicothoracic region. We maintained the rat under standard laboratory conditions. The room temperature was 18–21 °C, relative humidity was 40–70% and the light:dark cycle was 12-h:12-h. We gave the rat a pelleted diet from a commercial supplier and provided filtered, ultraviolet-treated water ad libitum.

All organs, including the cervicothoracic mass, were fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin. Tissues were processed, embedded in paraffin, sectioned at 3–4 μm and stained with hematoxylin and eosin for histopathology evaluation.
