Increased proliferation in the colonic crypts of Muc2/IL-10DKO mice. BrdU staining of the proximal (a and b) and the distal (c and d) colon. In WT mice, BrdU-positive cells were localized at the base of the crypts in both proximal and distal colon (a and c, respectively). The Muc2/IL-10DKO mice, however, showed an increase in the number of BrdU-positive cells in both the proximal and the distal colon and these cells extended halfway up the crypt (b and d, respectively). The panels on the right-hand side with an asterisk represent a higher magnification of the crypts in the distal colon.
