Localization of Tff3 and Muc4 protein expression in the colon. Tff3 (blue panel) was expressed by goblet cells in the proximal colon (a) of WT mice, but was virtually absent in the proximal colon (b) of Muc2/IL-10DKO mice. In the distal colon, Tff3 was present in the goblet cells (c) of WT mice and (d) Muc2/IL-10DKO mice. (e) Muc4 (orange panel) was expressed by the proximal colon of WT mice, but is hardly detectable in the proximal colon (f) of Muc2/IL-10DKO mice. Muc4 was expressed by goblet cells in the (g) distal colon of both WT and (h) Muc2/IL-10DKO mice. In the Muc2−/− mice, Muc4 was expressed by goblet cells in both the proximal (i) and the distal colon (j), but in fewer numbers compared to WT mice. The staining for Muc4 in the IL-10−/− mice corresponded to the staining pattern in the WT mice proximal colon (k) and distal colon (l).
