Unsupervised hierarchical clustering. (a) Clustering of RCCs based on their expression of VEGF and VEGF-Rs on tumor, vessel and adjacent normal tissue. Six distinct expression patterns were observed. (b) Tumor vessel areas of each cluster are shown. Lines on each bar represent the 95, 75%, mean, 25 and 5% intervals. Two clusters, denoted with an asterisk, have significantly higher vessel areas than the remaining clusters (both P<0.0034 by ANOVA). (c) With the exception of chromophobe carcinomas, the distributions of tumor subtypes are not significantly different between clusters. The expected number per cluster is denoted on the right. (d) Survival analysis of the identified clusters shows that two clusters—both with high VEGF/VEGFR tumor expression—have decreased survival relative to the remaining cases. Significance was determined using the log-rank test.
