Expression of putative cancer stem cell markers in HNSCC cell lines. Cell surface marker expression (CD44 and CD133) and functional attributes (side population and label retention) of cancer stem cells were used to identify the sub-population of cells within the six HNSCC cell lines. (a) The percentage of cells expressing each of the markers (±s.e.m.) was determined in at least three independent experiments. (b) Plot of the correlation between the expression (expressed as a percentage of the total cell population) of each putative stem cell marker vs the minimum number of cells, of each cell line, sufficient to initiate a tumor.
