(a, b) Modulation of neutrophil apoptosis by flagellate and aflagellate S. typhimurim strains. Neutrophils were cultured in the presence or absence of either a heat-killed wild-type S. typhimurium strain (SIN22) or an isogenic aflagellate mutant strain (SIN41) in the indicated bacteria/neutrophil ratios for 24 h at 37 °C. Apoptosis was then measured by flow cytometry (a; n=8, *P<0.01 and **P<0.05 vs unstimulated cells). (b) A representative experiment performed in a 1:1 bacteria/neutrophil ratio is shown.
