From: Low doses of Celecoxib attenuate gut barrier failure during experimental peritonitis

A diagram of the proposed role of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2)-derived prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) on the epithelial barrier and effects of Celecoxib. Low levels of COX-2-derived PGE2 are required for epithelial homeostasis and gut protection, whereas high levels of PGE2 promote gut barrier failure. High doses of Celecoxib are not beneficial because they obliterate the protective effect of PGE2. Low doses of Celecoxib blunt the inflammatory burst of PGE2 while preserving the protective effect.
