Schematic illustration of somatic cell reprogramming to iPSCs and progenitor or adult stem cells. Somatic cells can be reprogrammed to iPSCs using viral or non-viral introduction of exogenous TFs or protein transfection. Small molecules can either substitute for certain TFs and/or improve reprogramming efficiency by epigenetic modifications or signaling pathway regulation. The abbreviations of the small molecules are shown in Table 2.
