Heat-stable killing activity of mouse serum is greater in wild-type mice than in Lpsd-mutant mice. The number of viable bacteria was determined after incubation with HI serum from BALB/c vs. BALB/c-Lpsd mice at 30, 90,120, and 150 min after inoculation. HI serum from BALB/c mice killed FA1090 bacteria more efficiently when compared with HI serum from BALB/c-Lpsd. Both sera had killing activity when compared with the buffer control. Log10 CFU recovered from no serum controls at any time point ranged from 5.07 to 5.54 (data not shown). *P<0.05, unpaired t-test. These data are representative of four independent experiments.
